The French government awarded him the Croix de Guerre and he fell in love with the "city of light" and settled here because it offered the promise of living on one's merits and not on social conventions. In his own words, “it seemed to me that the French democracy influenced the minds of both white and black Americans there and helped us to act like brothers as near as possible.”
