The story of France resisting occupation during World War II begins on the bridge between Ile St. Louis and Ile de la Cite and traces the activities of Charles de Gaulle, Jean Moulin and the rest of the Resistance as they lead underground opposition to the Vichy State and Hitler's Third Reich. This walk is specifically designed to explain the circumstances of the French surrender and collaboration in 1940, to recount the harsh life under the Nazis which lasted for four years, issuing a passionate spirit of counter activity in the name of freedom, and to describe how the resistance ultimately succeeds to attract allied help and liberate the city of Paris in August of 1944.
